The Mooncake Economy

Mooncake 15

For the past couple of weeks, I have been around two Asian countries with strong Chinese influences – a compelling reason for mooncakes to be sold in every corner of Hong Kong and Vietnam. After all, the 15th of August of the lunar calendar is tomorrow – the Mid-Autumn Festival is here. While everyone loves the traditional lotus seed paste, mung bean and salted egg fillings, commercial brands can’t help but make the most out of the occasion to bring out their creativity in fusing tradition with chocolate, ice cream and coffee – or to contribute to the modern mooncake gift-giving economy. Meanwhile, I take a bite of my first Vietnamese mooncake in its elegant snowskin – oh, too much coconut.
