580-meter stretch of a shopping arcade smack right in Midosuji, southern Osaka – Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade 心斎橋筋 Shinsaibashisuji is the first recommendation we get whenever we ask for a good shopping place in Osaka. Walking down the long arcade of stores, we couldn’t imagie how it was possible that Shinsaibashi-suji has existed for at least a hundred years, having been established sometime during the Edo period. Clad with various kinds of stores, what we found were way beyond modern clothing and novelty shops – kimono, pottery, calligraphy and music specialty stores, one-of-a-kind restaurants, karaoke bars and even pachinko game centers. Well that was a long walk! Conveniently, Dotonbori 道頓堀 with all those delicious local delicacies is waiting right at the southern end of all these.
