Iced Fruit Skewers


As colder seasons come near, peddlers travel around the streets of China with carts full of the colorful traditional snacks called 糖葫蘆 tang hu lu.

Today’s vendors use mandarin oranges, strawberries, kiwifruits and cherry tomatoes among others, but their predecessors used hawthorn 山楂 shan zha which are known to be beneficial to the heart. After carefully placing these fruits in bamboo skewers, the hu lu makers plunged these in sugar syrup and leave them to harden into ice-like crystals. Although it is said that 糖葫蘆 tang hu lu is most famous among children, I reckon that it’s popular across locals of all ages.
